GIRL IN A MANS WORLD?
I've got nothing against females doing what the macho men might describe as a man's job; but, when it comes to sports reporting,
I feel a woman has to be exceptional to be accepted by the audience.
Especially when it's television and radio. And I'm afraid that Joanne Cantwell doesn't quite cut the mustard, in my opinion. Thus you can guess how impressed with what appeared in the Irish News last week.
Here it is:
So, you think you know your onions when it comes to Gaelic football? Have an opinion on this summer's eagerly-awaited Senior Football Championship and the race to win 'the Sam' or a hunch as to who at very least can be the Kings of Ulster in 2008?
If this is your game then why not try your luck in the great Irish News ticket giveaway to play a part in our unmissable Ulster Championship preview night at the Market Place Theatre in Armagh on Thursday, May 22.
For Gaelic football fans this is a must-attend Talk Ulster Football night hosted by RTE sports presenter Joanne Cantwell who will ask the questions to an expert Gaelic football panel featuring two former All-Ireland SFC winners – Armagh's Benny Tierney and Dara O Cinneide of Kerry – leading GAA lawyer and former Tyrone player Feargal Logan and Irish News reporter and columnist Paddy Heaney.
"It is hard to believe nobody has thought of doing something like this before. It is really going to be a great night and one I am thrilled to be a part of," said Joanne, adding: "The Ulster Football Championship is always particularly special and the Talk Ulster Football night will be made all the more intriguing by the fact that this year's championship is more wide open than in years and no-one can be certain of what way it's likely to pan out."
Irish News editor Noel Doran, whom I worked with when he was a humble reporter with the Ballymena Observer way back in the late 70s and early 80s, said: "I think we have managed to put together a first class panel of commentators and it promises to be a lively and entertaining night in Armagh."
The fact that her first comment was that nobody had thought of something like this before indicates my opening point - unless, of course, she means she's surprised nobody had asked her to be involved in one until now.
