MINOR TIES A MAJOR WORRY

A grossly unhappy minor team manager from a local club contacted me last week with a gripe about the latest example of how much too much is being asked of our young footballers - and, like so many before him, he argues that it all so very unnecessary.
It just seems to a force of habit that causes these things to happen year on year in the county - and one wonders why it is the case.
Referring to the pressure over just a period of the
current two weeks, he club minor team boss cited just how hectic the match and training programme is for some of the players - and, predictably and inevitably, it is the cream of the players who are being pressed into action most often.
He started with last Saturday week and on that day the two big matches were the Hogan Cup Final, magnificently won by St.Patrick's Academy, and the Ulster Minor League in which Tyrone impressively defeated our derby rivals, Fermanagh.
Then on Monday night it was back to the thick of the action with the clubs as a round of matches were played in the Tyrone Minor Leagues.
There was a training session scheduled for Tuesday night, but that postponed for 48 hours and went ahead on Thursday.
But, prior to that, there was another round of club league games to be fulfilled.
County minor action took centre stage again on Sunday as they faced Antrim.
On Saturday, the lads were togged out again as there was yet another series of club leagues contests to be played.
And then it was back to the clubs for more demanding and stamina-sapping play in the local leagues last night, Monday - and again they are summoned to don the clu b jerseys on Wednesday night of this week.
Now, as our friend rightly pointed out, there's no mention in that exacting schedule of any club training - or of the demands of the players who are also expected to line out for the club reserve or senior teams in the all-county leagues.
No does he make reference to any football they may have to play in accordance with the school curriculum - or in any other physical sports, or indeed gym activity, they may be obliged or choose to participate in.
So again we pose the
question as to whether or not the programme of matches in the minor league could be framed in such a way as to restrict the possibility of burn-out in lads, who are at the stage in life where they may think there is no reason to suspect that they are doing any harm by endlessly
pushing themselves to extreme limits.
While I appreciate that the needs of some of lesser
performers, especially the guys who are not guaranteed a starting place in the team for every game, might be facilitated with two rounds of fixtures a week, surely just one a week would serve a more equitable purpose.
It's a long time until October, so this has to be a situation the new committee formed as part of the CCC must get on an early agenda.
