CCTV call in aftermath of Dungannon murder

EFFORTS to re-instate the long defunct CCTV cameras in Dungannon, must be re-doubled in the wake of the murder of a local man on Easter Sunday.
That was the verdict of a town councillor, who called for people in the community to ignore "rumours" circulating about the circumstances of the killing of Shaun Fitzpatrick.
There has also been a call for "every member of society" to play their role in ensuring the safety of themselves and others while out socialising.
Vincent Currie, SDLP councillor for Dungannon, told the Tyrone Times: "The first thing would be to say not to pay any attention to rumours. I know there are rumours all over the place.
"I would rather be sure of what the facts are, rumours can be dangerous.
"This was an awful thing to happen on an Easter Sunday morning and in a quiet, residential area. This is totally out of character for the Donaghmore Road area."
Restraint
Cllr Currie called for restraint and calm in the aftermath of Mr Fitzpatrick's murder.
"While I don't want to make little of the murder of this young man, and, while it has huge implications certainly, I wouldn't want to see it spoil Dungannon as a social venue", he said.
"We must re-double our efforts to get CCTV up and running again and fully operational.
"There was a meeting about the issue two weeks ago and there was whole-hearted support for CCTV. While it may not be an answer to every problem, it would certainly be a deterrent."
Lawless
Mayor, Cllr Barry Monteith, said the murder of Mr Fitzpatrick was an indication of "increasing lawlessness" in all local towns, not just Dungannon.
"Unfortunately, when you look at the news this week, things like this seem more and more common. This is happening not just in Dungannon, it is all over.
"There is an increasing sense of lawlessness all over. It is a terrible pity that people can't go out without ending in tragedy. I can understand people's fears and, obviously, in the wake of an event like this, there will be fears. But I don't know how you guarantee people's safety all the time.
"I don't believe Dungannon is any more dangerous than any town. Everybody has a role to play, there is an onus on every member of society, young and old. Everybody has a responsibility for their own actions, to ensure people around them are safe. Everybody has a responsibility to encourage people to do the right thing."
