DONAGHMORE Historical Society is organising a tour of Castle Hill, led by Pat John Rafferty.
It is only within the last few years that Castle Hill in Dungannon has been identified among a wider audience as one of the most valuable historic sites in Ulster, indeed in the whole of Ireland.

The recent archaeological findings and the subsequent publicity emanating from the work of the Channel 4 Time Team and the Archaeological Dept. of Queen’s University have helped to establish its status as a site of national significance. For over three hundred years Castle Hill was the headquarters of the O Neills, traditional rulers of Ulster and former High Kings of Ireland. During the time of Hugh O Neill, at the juncture of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it was the centre of Gaelic resistance against the armies of Queen Elizabeth. Subsequently the Plantation fort and town were founded on the ruins of O Neill’s castle and environs.

The tour of this historic site will take place on Monday May 12 at 7.45 p.m. Patrons are requested to assemble at the top of Market Square, at Ranfurly House. All are welcome.
