TEENAGERS are using an abandoned property - located right beside Dungannon Council's flagship tourism project at Castle Hill - as a "drugs den".
The Tyrone Times has obtained shocking photographs, taken by a nearby resident, which show discarded syringes and needles and even unopened bottles of what he believes are veterinary medicines.
Fearful for the safety of the many people of all ages w
ho regularly visit the picturesque Castle Hill walkway - which is to be developed into a major tourism destination by the local council at a cost of around £5 million - the man has called for immediate action by the appropriate authorities to secure the derelict property.
"If anything ever happened to a child or an animal, should they ever happen to venture into this building with the door lying wide to the world, I would never forgive myself for not making this public knowledge", the resident told the Times.
"When I went in there to take these photographs, I was totally disgusted by the state of the place. This has horrified me. There are syringes and needles lying everywhere, there is Tippex and glue in bags. You can even see from the photos that there are pillows and
According to the man, police have visited the building on numerous occasions to move the youths on.
"There are usually about six or seven teenagers gathered at this building", he continued. "On a couple of occasions I have seen the same person there.
"The door lock is broken now so anyone who is passing the building could very easily open it. On a very hot day, if a child or a dog wandered in there and stood on one of these needles or something, it doesn't bear thinking about what could happen."
In a further frightening development, the local resident told the Tyrone Times how he believes his beloved family pet may have become infected after coming into contact with abandoned veterinary medicines inside the vacant property.
