A FOREIGN national was refused bail at Dungannon court yesterday, Monday, after being accused of involvement in a gay sex blackmail plot that targeted a prominent local man.
Rostus Malin, 30, who is charged with making unwarranted demands with menace from the individual on June 20, appeared at yesterday's (Monday) magistrates' court to seek bail.
Flanked by two security guards, Malin, who was unshaven with closely cropp
ed hair, spoke only to his solicitor during the short hearing. He was dressed in a dark jacket, white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Allegation

It is alleged that Malin, who has no current address, demanded £15,000 in cash from the man, whose name and profession could not be dislcosed in court, in return for photographic negatives showing the complainant in a compromising sexual position.
District Judge John Meehan applied a reporting restriction to the press to protect the identity of the complainant.
The court heard that Malin, who was described as self-employed, had threatened to send the lurid photographs to local newspapers.
The investigating officer added that enquiries were being made through Interpol to uncover whether the defendant had any similar convictions.

Claims

Defending solicitor Jarlath Faloon told the court that Malin, a father-of-three originally from Armenia, claimed he had befriended the complainant, and received money from him to help pay medical bills.
The court heard that one of Malin's children is suffering from leukaemia and undergoing expensive treatment.
The solicitor added that the defendant would stay at the residence of a cousin in Derry and obey any bail conditions imposed by the court.
However, the district judge refused the bail application, saying that the offence was a serious matter and had left the complainant in a very vulnerable position.
The case was adjourned until July 9.
