RAW sewage is turning an environmental jewel in the crown into a stinking beauty.
Coalisland Canal which supports protected species such as kingfishers and is a popular recreational waterway, is in danger of becoming a health hazard, a environmental campaigner has warned.
For the last week untreated waste has been leaking into the canal at Macs Lock, emitting foul odours and endangering the health of residents and wildlife.
Plunkett Scullion, a wildlife enthusiast and passionate angler, warned that the pollution was toxic and could cause an environmental crisis.
He said it was scandalous that in the 21st Century local people might flush their toilets and watch the contents float down a river.
"Children play around the canal and fishermen also use this attractive and ecologically diverse waterway", he said.
"I was shocked to see the sewage float down the river. The smell itself was highly offensive and could be detected from afar."
Mr Scullion, who has filed a complaint with Environmental Heritage Services, warned that protected species such as kingfishers could be killed by the pollution.
"This water also runs through farmland and could affect the health of livestock."
He claimed it was the second time this year such a spill had occurred.
According to Mr Scullion, EHS are currently investigating the leak.
