INCREASING the availability of parking and establishing a free bus service to ferry shoppers between Dungannon town centre and the Linen Green complex, are two of the more significant issues up for discussion at a major retail event this evening, Tuesday.
Hosted by the Venturei Network and PHT Consultants, in conjunction with the local council and Dungannon Regeneration Partnership (DRP) among others, the event is aimed at individuals from the commercial sector but is open to everyone with an interest in the future of retail in the town centre.
Dungannon councillor and Chairman of DRP, Walter Cuddy, explained that the event is the latest stage in a partnership which brings together retail sectors from Dungannon, Monaghan and Armagh.
As part of that strategy, he outlined, a major Christmas shopping television advertising campaign was embarked upon by the three areas.
Cllr Cuddy says parking is a major issue of importance to improving the retail environment in Dungannon.
"We have always felt in DRP that we have never been able to get over the parking and traffic management hurdle in the town", he told the Tyrone Times.

Significant issues

"We all know that with Castlehill car park in particular, the evidence shows that the Roads Service gets more return out of that car park than any other in the western region. That car park needs expansion."
The programme also includes plans to issue a leaflet to some 30,000 shoppers, informing them of parking facilities in Dungannon.
"We don't want anybody to get a parking ticket", said Cllr Cuddy.
"Some people don't realise, for instance, that you can park in the loading bays on a Saturday. It's all about educating the car user in the town. This is about moving the programme to the next level and seeing how we can develop it.
"Existing retailers who are proud of their town and are prepared to put a bit of effort into improving their town, are all encouraged to come along. Of course, if there is the capacity for new larger retailers to have an input, then they, too, can come along."
Tomorrow's event takes place at the Bank House Hotel from 6pm until 8.30pm.
