Dungannon Rovers quest for the Division Two title was conquered this week with two victories over Tullyvallen and Lurgan Institute.
The Tyrone men needed three points from the last two games to make sure of the Division Two title. Rovers ensured they didn’t have to wait until the last day of the season by beating Tullyvallen 3-0 on Tuesday before finishing the league season in st
yle with a 3-1 victory at Lurgan Institute.

It was a pretty nervous start from Dungannon Rovers and for the first 25 minutes they were not able to play their usual flowing football on the compact pitch.

But after the first goal came the Dungannon men settled down and the result was never in doubt.Filipe Cabral got on the end of a through ball on 25 minutes and managed to lob the keeper.

From this moment on the Rovers dominated play in all areas of the pitch and the second goal came on 60 minutes when Mervyn Kirk scored from a corner kick with a back post header.

Clive Shannon got the third goal on 75 minutes with another header to make certain of the three points needed to take the title.

Dungannon knew they could relax in this match as they had already made certain of the title but they still wanted to finish the league campaign with a win and they did so with an accomplished performance.

Lurgan took the lead on 15 minutes from a corner after a smart save from Micky Hands but a forward pounced on the rebound to make it 1-0.

The Rovers came back into the game with a screamer from Clive Shannon after 20 minutes who hit the ball from just outside the 18 yard box going across the keeper skimming the crossbar and into the net.

The second came on 25 minutes after a great counter attack, Dale Shaw won the ball in our right back position and the ball fell to Garry Maguire who carried the ball to the halfway line before releasing Clive down the right wing who cut the ball across the six yard box for the onrushing Lee Wigton to slot home.

The second half saw some decent football from both sides but the Rovers were the only team to score when Filipe Cabral scored a back post header. The Institute lads then formed a Guard of Honour after the match for the Division Two champions which was a nice touch.
