Cookstown justified their favourite's tag by annexing the Ulster championship title to complete a remarkable treble for the season
This was despite not being at their best against Cavan champions Lavey at Brewster Park Enniskillen on Sunday afternoon, writes Kevin Kelly.
The Fr Rocks were full value for their victory as they emulated the achievements of Trillick last season by keeping the title in Tyrone for another twelve months but they were made to fight right to the wire by a dogged Lavey side, who played most of the game with only fourteen men.
Defender Fergal Smith was straight red-carded after an off the ball incident with Brian Mulligan in the twenty third minute but, as nearly always, the side who were a man down made light of the disadvantage.
Cookstown had looked very impressive early on as their defence completely snuffed out the threat of the Lavey attack while the quick, early ball into Owen Mulligan was paying huge dividends.
Mulligan had kicked three points and was giving his marker a torrid time but for some reason Cookstown stopped putting the ball into him.
Instead they insisted on overplaying the ball in the half back line and at midfield and they were bottled up by a Lavey side who probably couldn't believe that they were still within striking distance of their opponents.
