The curtain officially came down on the local pool season on Friday night when the Starplan Pool League's top knockout trophy The Tennents Cup moved into the safe keeping of former league champions McAleers following their 3-2 win over section 2 champions Clonoe B at Donaghys Bar.
A keenly contested affair the final proved to be surprise finalists Clonoe who have had a pretty good season gave as good as they got and on occasion showed the sort of form that disposed of the challenges of section 1 champions Donaghys A and Daviso
ns A en route to the final. In the end however McAleers proved a bridge too far for the Clonoe men the Tennents cup was the only tangible reward left for the 2007 champions and they were not going to let that chance go a begging.
Having said that things might have been so different had newly crowned section 2 individual champion Collie Doris been able to extract full advantage of his opportunities against Justy McAleer in the opening match as the draw looked to favour Clonoe with their big guns out early in play. Young Doris gave the experienced Justy quite a test before the McAleers man prevailed 2-1 and from there 1-0 became 2-0 when Shane Mallon beat Kevin Devlin in straight frames with the Clonoe man the hero in the win over Donaghys cursing himself for not making better use of his chance on two shots in frame 2.
Backs to the wall Mal O Neill gave Clonoe a lifeline when he potted superbly to take out Kieran Sommerville and shoot Clonoe right back into the final. Conor McAleer would secure the cup for McAleers with a great display of controlled pool but once more Clonoe were left to rue missed chances. Pa Doose Connors opponent looked to have the second frame sown up and on an eight ball when some awkward cueing saw the opportunity go astray as McAleer cleared up to give his charges the trophy.
Kevin McCabe beat Bob Herron in the final encounter but at that stage it was purely cosmetic the Tennents cup was heading for the Donaghmore Road an impressive replacement for the league trophy as McAleers ended the season on a high.
League chairman Tony Slevin and vice chairman Finbar Hughes presented the prizes and thanks are due to Donaghys Bar for their hospitality on the night.
