Swifts season ends with low key draw

DUNGANNON Swifts finished off their fifth season in the top flight with a low key draw at the Coleraine Showgrounds that secures a disappointing tenth place finish.
But, as has been the case so often in recent weeks, they were left to rue sloppy goals conceded and good scoring chances missed as another winning opportunity passed them by.
Two of Harry Fay's January signings led the way on a day when suspensions
and injuries once more denied the Stangmore Park boss a selection headache.
Teenage winger Shea McGerrigan impressed with darting runs up the left flank that caused regular problems for the Coleraine defence, while Jamie Tomelty posed a constant threat with creative touches that complemented the ball winning skills of Michael Hegarty in the heart of midfield.
While McGerrigan and Tomelty were the stand out performers, everyone else played good supporting roles.
Davy Wells made a surprise return as cover for Dwayne Nelson, out with an ankle injury he picked up at Donegal Celtic last week, and he had a busy time in his last game for Swifts before departing to Cliftonville.
Sometimes it was through the hard work of the home side but occasionally it was as a result of poor defending that left the Englishman exposed but all things considered it was a good outing to sign off on.
Up front Austin Friel scored the best goal of the game to return Swifts in front but without the presence of Mark McAllister, the threat seemed fairly lightweight.
Weakened
And that was the problem for Dungannon, they had the plays but not the finishes required to win this game against a weakened Coleraine side more concerned with this weekend's cup final than winning a meaningless end of season game.
Swifts impressed in the early stages with McGerrigan racing up the left flank on three minutes to cross for but just missed finding Friel who had read the situation well, adjusted his run to get into position to meet the delicate centre but arrived a fraction of a second too late to finish the superb move.
More moves on the left side proved the strong point for Dungannon and midway through the opening half they opened the scoring with one when Tomelty was afforded space to come into the centre. With the defence standing off, Tomelty fired in a speculative shot from 25 yards that caught stand-in keeper Laurence McCormick out, bouncing awkwardly to enter the net unchallenged.
On 29 minutes a pass from Hegarty had Tomelty in on goal again. His effort from 22 yards again bounced unnaturally off the turf but this time McCormick was alert to the danger making a comfortable save.
Blocked
After a shot from McGerrigan was blocked at the near post by McCormick, Trevor Hutchinson interrupted the good run of play for Swifts when he hit The Bannsider's first real chance of the game on 36 minutes.
A pass from Alan Ewart opened the Swifts defence up on the left edge of the box but a rising strike drifted wide of the top left corner.
McMinn, showing no ill effects form an opening minute injury, came close to adding to the lead when he emerged from the pack to meet a McGerrigan corner from the right on 41 minutes. A bullet-like header was on target but cruelly on McMinn pushed over by McCormick.
Coleraine had had plenty of the first half play but only put that possession to best use in the final minutes of the half. A foul on Ewart on the edge of the box handed Stewart Clanachan a chance from 18 yards, his first attempt made it past the wall but was parried by Wells. Clanachan had a second chance with the rebound but defender Mark McConkey threw himself at the ball.
Having worked so hard for the lead, Swifts gave it up softly, gifting an equaliser for Hutchinson three minutes after the break. A poor pass from Damien Whitehead was mistakenly dealt with by McMinn when John Curran and keeper Wells were both better placed to intercept. That misplaced touch presented Hutchinson with an unexpected scoring chance and a simple shot found an unopposed route to the net.
Snapshot
On 56 minutes Tomelty hit a snapshot just over from 25 yards after being put through by Friel and then, just after the hour, the Cookstown midfielder took the ball to near the left endline before blasting a low shot off the near post.
Another mistake by McMinn when dealing with a shot from substitute Stephen Carson put Whitehead and Hunter in but fortunately the error wasn't punished as Whitehead fired a shot across the goal face and wide to the left.
The action switched quickly to the opposite side and after Terry Fitzpatrick's diving header on Friel's cross went wide the industrious midfielder reversed roles.
A cross from the left wing from Fitzpatrick was superbly controlled by Friel in the heart of the Coleraine box before chinking past a defender and drilling a thumping shot into the net after 73 minutes.
The lead was short-lived though as a corner from Carson was met at the near post by Kyle McVey whose header was deflected into the Swifts net.
Coleraine came close to nicking the win two minutes from the end when a corner from Carson was turned goalward by Hutchinson with Wells parrying before Okunaiya hoofed the ball clear.
