Tyrone Towers have a major surprise in store as four of the top American Division One College players look set to be added to the coaching staff for next week's basketball camp.
Having players of this standard in attendance will be a first for any Irish-based basketball camp. All four girls are part of the Mount St Mary's Basketball programme in the United States and this season they enjoyed their highest finish in a number
of years when they were placed second in the North East conference.
Information on Mount St Mary's can be found by clicking the women's basketball section on www.mountathletics.com.
Head Coach Jerome Westbrooks, right, is delighted with the news and he is currently in negotiations to ensure that they will be available to coach in Dungannon for the entire week. He said that discussions look very positive and it is now just a matter of confirming flight times.
These girls play at the very top level of American College basketball, considered by many to be the best league in the world. It is highly probable that at least one of these girls will play in the WNBA (Women's NBA). To have players of this high standard coaching at our camp will be a great experience for everyone and will raise the standard for all campers.
Mount St Mary's is based in a real hotbed of basketball in Maryland, USA. Having these players coaching for the week would be a major coup for the summer camp. In fact one of the girls hoping to come over, Mary Dunn, was voted onto the Rookie All-Star team for 2009 meaning that she is considered as one of the brightest prospects in the competitive world of Women's basketball.
Coach Westbrooks is also hoping that his son, Isaac, will be available to coach. Isaac has just finished his first season as a professional player with Leicester Riders in the British Superleague. He finished the season as starting point guard with the Riders and made his debut on SKY after Leicester won through to the BBL final this year.
Tyrone Towers Basketball Camp runs from next Monday through to Friday 10th, open to boys and girls aged 8–19 and players of all of all abilities are welcome.
Application forms are available from Dungannon Leisure Centre or by emailing tyronetowers@hotmail.co.uk. Registrations will be accepted on Monday from 8.30am to 8.45am at St Patrick's College on the Killymeal Road.
