Coalisland/Clonoe CCE AGM to take place

Guitar lessons with Coalisland/Clonoe CCE

THE last few weeks have been eventful in the calender of Coalisland/Clonoe CCE.

Music classes were launched in mid-September, and as ever, the interest in learning fiddle, whistle and guitar has been immense.

It is hoped this is a good omen for a very fruitful year to come.

In other news, Coalisland/Clonoe CCE, in conjunction with Brocagh Heritage Group, was an integral part of the John Canavan Weekend which was held at Castlebay from 12 to 14 October.

This was to celebrate 150 years since the birth of the local poet John Canavan, who wrote many songs including The Fisherman’s Lament.

On the Friday night the organisers were honoured to have Marie Heaney (wife of poet Seamus Heaney) take part in events.

As well as dramatisation of the life and times of John Canavan through his poetry and song, on the Saturday night there was an epic session with musicians coming from far and wide.

Sunday marked the end of the event with a singing session, as well as a display of works from the local schools and historical tours, and a plaque commemorating John Canavan errected at Mullinahoe Graveyard, Ardboe.

It was a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to local culture, but had so little recognition during his lifetime.

The local branch is actively promoting all aspects of our culture throughout the district, and has posed a question to the local community: Do you want to be part of that too?

If so why not come along to the group’s AGM which will be held on Tuesday October 30 in the Oznam Centre, Coalisland, at 8pm, and make Coalisland/Clonoe your branch of Comhaltas.
