Date looms to nominate your inspirational family member
THERE is still time left to nominate your inspirational Northern Ireland Family Heroes for their chance to receive £2,000 as part of a UK wide search to find those people who have made a difference in the lives of their loved ones.
People like six year-old Adam Kerr from Armagh, who was crowned the winner of the 4Children and Take a Break’s Family Heroes Awards for 2011.
Adam donated bone marrow to his little sister, Helen, three, in a bid to save her life from a rare form of cancer.
Sadly, Helen still passed away. But brave Adam has always wanted to help others.
When Helen died he began raising money for poorly children he’d met during his sister’s time in hospital.
Adam gave them his toys and as he grew up he organised fundraising activities to help pay for their treatment or to give terminally ill children the chance to fulfill one of their dreams.
His exceptional bravery made Adam the winner of 4Children and Take a Break Family Heroes’ National prize for 2011, and organisers of the competition want others to be put forward and have their achievements honoured in much the same way.
Be they a family member, a friend, childminder, social worker, teacher or doctor, family heroes come in all shapes and sizes, so if you know of someone that you think is a true family hero, why not show your appreciation and nominate them for an award.
Don’t forget to nominate your hero - nominations close on August 31!
Returning to host the awards after last year, radio and television presenter, Neil Fox, said: “After last year’s awards, I am delighted to be hosting the Family Hero Awards once again on behalf of 4Children and Take a Break.
“Families are at the heart of our communities and the Family Hero Awards are a time to celebrate this and thank those that have made a real difference in helping to support families and children across the UK.
“As many of us know, raising a family is one of life’s most incredible and rewarding experiences.....but it is also, at times, one of the hardest jobs out there and sometimes we all need a bit of extra help to get by and give our children the best possible start in life.
“These awards are the least we can offer to the heroes that have inspired us and helped us to get through the daily challenges of everyday life.”
Rebecca Fleming, Editor of Take a Break, said: “It is always an enormous privilege to meet all our Family Heroes finalists and to hear their stories. They are special people who every day go the extra mile to help others through difficult times. To us, they are all true heroes.”
