Get your electric blanket tested

FATAL FIRES claim 12 lives every year across Northern Ireland and the Southern Trust are trying to help tackle this by offering free electric blanket testing service and the need to take steps to prevent fire.

Electric blanket testing will take place in Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council chambers on Wednesday 19th September between 10am and 4pm.

It is necessary to book an appointment if you plan on getting your blanket tested. You can book an appointment by ringing 028 3741 2521.

Gerard Rocks, Assistant Director of Promoting Wellbeing, for the Southern Trust said: “This free electric blanket testing service is available to anyone living in the Southern Trust area.

“Last year 610 blankets were tested by our trained electrical engineer and out of these, 342 blankets failed the safety test as they were either too old or were deemed to pose a fire risk to their owners.

“Blankets can fail due to wear and tear or become damaged because they are stored incorrectly. Clients whose blankets failed are given a £15.00 voucher towards the cost of a new blanket, a total of 259 people made use of these vouchers to purchase a new electric blanket.

“It is advisable to have an electric blanket tested at least every three years. Just because a blanket is working doesn’t mean that it is safe. These sessions also provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about staying safe at home.”

Nina Daly, Accident Prevention Officer, for the Southern Trust explained: “As well as having your electric blanket tested, if you have concerns about a family member, neighbour or friend being at risk of fire, you can now access a Service and Information Directory on the Trust website www.southerntrust.hscni.net (look under healthy living section, accident prevention).
