Lottery cash to help Dungannon community venues save money

A Dungannon community organisation will be able to carry out energy saving improvements to its venue thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

Donaghmore Historical Society is one of 20 groups across Northern Ireland awarded grants totalling nearly £438,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Energy Efficient Venues programme.

The programme offers Lottery cash to local groups to carry out improvements to their community venues so they make savings on their heating and lighting costs and cut down on their spending.

The society, based in the village of Donaghmore, will use a grant of £34,000 to insulate the walls and roof of their community venue, replace windows, install draught proofing and upgrade the lighting. A new boiler will be installed along with new radiators and heating controls.

The improvements they make will help reduce their energy bills and save them money they can put back into running community activities.

Augharan Development Group has also been awarded £30,341 to install a new heating system in their community venue, put in draught proofing, wall and floor insulation and replace their existing lighting with low energy fittings. A new water connection will also be carried out so they can install a new energy efficient condensing boiler.

The Royal British Legion Club Dungannon is using £3,559 to replace the existing back doors in their community venue with new ones and install voltage optimisation units to reduce and regulate incoming voltage to their club.

Frank Hewitt, the Big Lottery Fund’s NI Chair said: “The Energy Efficient Venues programme supports community organisations to carry out energy efficiency improvements to their venues that help them make savings during this difficult period of recession, and have a positive effect on the environment.

“Organisations in Northern Ireland should be aware that the programme is now closed for applications.”
