Mid-Ulster volunteers honoured
Young volunteers from the Cookstown and Magherafelt Volunteer Centre were among four hundred young people aged 14–24 within Northern Ireland who received their ‘Award of Excellence’ recently from John O’Dowd, Minister for Education.
Barbara Kennedy, Recruitment and Placement Officer said, “The contribution these local young people make to our community is significant. Not only are they making a difference to local people, but they are also gaining valuable experience and skills for their own future.”
Karen who received her Award of Excellence at the ceremony said, “I really enjoyed my time volunteering. I have gained valuable experience working with adults with learning disabilities and children. I would recommend volunteering to everyone as it improves your confidence and provides you with an opportunity to learn new skills. It has helped me to decide which career path I should take.”
Timmy who volunteered with several local organisations one of which was with Magherafelt Volunteer Centre says, “Volunteering has been a great experience that has given me a sense of achievement and satisfaction. I’d like to thank everyone at the Volunteer Centre for their support and amazing work they do in supporting so many people’s lives. Although I have achieved my 200hrs Award of Excellence I hope to continue volunteering and be involved in my community.”
Ken who volunteered with Magherafelt District Advice Service explains, “I found volunteering a great way to give back to the community and the experience has been fantastic. I have met many great people, learnt so many new things and built on a lot of my own skills.”
Cherith, a local volunteer states,” I have really enjoyed my volunteer work with the Magherafelt Hospice Shop, Mencap Summer Scheme and the Mid Ulster Contact Centre. It has increased my confidence and allowed me to meet new people. I especially enjoyed working with children with disabilities as I found it very rewarding to work with children less fortunate than myself.
“I would like to thank the Magherafelt Volunteer Centre for all their help and support. I would recommend volunteering to anyone who is looking for a challenge and new experiences.”
