COOKSTOWN Chamber of Commerce has elected a new president. Alan Hogshaw succeeds Brian Jordan who has held the position for the past two years.

Mr Hogshaw, founder of the internet site mycookstown.com, which provides offers for businesses, events, cinema and local news, said he was delighted to take up the post and work with many of Cookstown’s successful businesses.

The Mid Ulster town’s Chamber of Commerce, under the leadership of Mr Jordan, has been aggressive in the past two years particularly in lobbying local council and central government agencies.

Last year the Chamber showed their opposition to proposed on-street car parking charges being introduced in the town and gathered 8000 petitions, presenting them to Roads Minister Danny Kennedy. All the traders breathed a sigh of relief when it was confirmed the proposal was to be shelved.

As well, Mr Jordan’s lobbying led to an undertaking from Cookstown District Council that in future they would help clear footpaths of snow and ice during extreme winter weather.

Mr Jordan said it was a privilege to hold the position of President and hopes the Chamber will continue to represent small businesses and retailers in the town in what are very challenging times. He thanked all those who supported his efforts over the past 24 months paying special thanks to the Council, its town councillors and fellow business owners.

“Despite the huge setback in the economy, Cookstown on the whole has weathered the storm very well and I am confident that the majority of businesses will be able to survive as there is still great optimism within the town.

Looking to the future Mr Jordan believes the new training academy at Desertcreat will bring huge benefits to the town when work commences. He also hopes that Cookstown will be the location for the new Mid Ulster Council and that DARD will relocate to Loughry, all of which will ensure the town’s vibrancy and future.

Next week Brian graduates at Queen’s University with a Masters Degree in Communication
