Parkinson’s service launched

Parkinson’s UK is now offering a special peer support service for people with the condition across the UK following a sucessful pilot last year.

Part of the charity’s free phone helpline, the peer support service puts people affected by Parkinson’s in touch with trained volunteers who are willing to share their personal experiences of living with the contition over the phone.

Last year, the Parkinson’s UK helpline took over 300 calls from people living in Northern Ireland and this new service will sit alongside the existing team of nurses, who can answer questions on medicines management and other clinical issues, and specialists in other areas including benefits, employment and social care.

Tim Moore, Advisory Services Manager at Parkinson’s UK, commented: “Those with direct experience of Parkinson’s UK, commented: “Those with direct experience of Parkinson’s have a unique insight into a condition which can be rather daunting to those affected.

“Our peer support service allows other in a similar position to access and benefit from that insight in a safe and condidential setting.”

The service is available to anyone affected by Parkinson’s. whether they’re newly diagnosed or have been living with the condition for some time. People with the condition can access the service, as well as carers, family members or friends of those with the condition.”

Specially trained volunteers are ready to provide essential support for people affected by Parksinsons can share their personal experiences on issues such as Deep Brain Stimulation, managing work and family life, coping with diagnosis, having a parent with Parkinson’s and being a carer for someone with Parkinson’s.
