Students awarded personal learning honours

SPECIAL needs students from South West College recently marked a significant milestone on their academic journey when they were awarded certificates for a number of qualifications gained on the On Board Personal Learning Programme (PLP).

Physical difficulties and challenges to learning have not stopped these students in their quest for success.

Through great commitment and effort they have produced impressive evidence portfolios in areas such as cookery, drama, ICT, art and crafts, all of which have contributed to successful completion of the Entry Level 2 and 3 ASDAN Award in Personal and Social Development, as well as Entry Level 1 and 3 in the NOCN Award in Skills Towards Enabling Progression (Step Up).

Speaking about the group’s achievements, Alastair McCarley, Deputy Head, Department of Health and Life Services, said:

“At South West College we are proud of the provision we offer to special needs students – an offering that not only enhances their overall learning experiences at the College but also encourages students to meet their achievement standards.”

The On Board PLP offers students two routes of study, namely Customer Service Skills and Developing Craft Skills.

Through the Customer Service Skills module, students develop experience and confidence in dealing with customers in a real-life work context, as well as gaining accreditation in food safety, teamwork and enterprise skills by operating a weekly café from the College’s Cookstown Campus.

The Developing Craft Skills module similarly allows students to focus on enterprise, teamwork and customer service skills, through the sale of arts and craft items.
