Concert to launch An Cór Gaelach’s CD is a success

THE Bardic Theatre in Donaghmore was packed to capacity on Saturday night (20th October) for the launch of the CD by Irish choir An Cór Gaelach.

It was a fantastic night of musical entertainment which brought together a host of local performers.

The award-winning choir, which is made up of past pupils from St. Joseph’s Grammar School, Donaghmore, thrilled the audience with a selection of unaccompanied traditional and contemporary Gaelic songs from its CD. The songs varied from blues-tinged arrangements to 11th Century hymns, which received rapturous applause on the night.

All-Ireland traditional singing champion Cathal O’Neill, from Derrytresk, sang a beautiful duet with the choir, before charming the audience with traditional ballads. He was followed later in the evening by Donaghmore-man Malachi Cush who joined the choir for the well-known Buachaill on Éirne before performing a variety of ballads to a captive audience.

In contrast but in equally entertaining style, The Swing Gals, an all-female vocal group, had toes tapping and fingers clicking to their jazzy interpretations, while top class traditional musicians Brendan Mulholland, John & Clare O’Neill, Gerdy Thompson and Damian Cullen proved an incredible combination with their jigs and reels.

The choir thanked its choir mistress Mrs Helen McRory from Dungannon for her work and dedication to the choir over many years and also for her most recent efforts in perfecting 16 songs for the CD and in preparing the choir for its launch concert. Brother Micheál Mac Eoin from Ardboe also received a special presentation for writing the choir’s exclusive choral arrangements over the years.

CDs can be obtained directly from the choir (www.ancorgaelach.com and www.facebook.com/ancorgaelach) and are on sale at Olive McCluggage Solicitors, Torrent Enterprise Centre, Donaghmore (028 87769290) and at Gene Stuart’s music shop, Irish Street, Dungannon (028 87725272).
