A COALISLAND charity worker, who was chosen by Tyrone Times readers as their Community Champion, has modestly insisted he is “only part of the team” as he accepted his award.

Michael O’Neill, Manager of St Vincent de Paul in the town, has been volunteering with the organisation for more than 30 years, and was singled out by members of the public for his dedication to helping those less fortunate.

Mr O’Neill faced tough competition from three other community workers from the Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough area, namely Eric Cumberland of Cunningham’s Lane Residents’ Association, Will MacLaughlin, Manager of Dungannon’s Christians Against Poverty, and Southern Area Hospice fundraiser and local GP, Dr Murty.

Michael received the biggest number of votes and was subsequently chosen as the Community Champion of the year, yet he was extremely modest when he arrived at the office to pick up his award.

He told the Tyrone Times: “I couldn’t understand it at all, the first I knew about it all was when I saw my name in the paper! I would just like to say that we at St Vincent de Paul are not a one-man band, and I would like to accept the award on behalf of the Holy Family Conference of St Vincent de Paul, because they all work at it and there are no individuals.

“We are a conference and we work as a team.

“St Vincent de Paul has always been well supported in Coalisland, we couldn’t function without the support of the community in Coalisland and the surrounding districts.

“I would like to thank all those who took the time to nominate and vote. It was all done without my consent and knowledge!

“I want to emphasise that, only for the generosity of the people of the area, through the church door collections and clothes donations, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. I’m only just a part of the team.”
