Pupils from four local schools have been learning about the power and exploring the benefits of wind energy through a series of educational visits to the Lendrum’s Bridge wind farm, situated between Fintona and Fivemiletown.

Developed and operated by RES UK & Ireland Ltd, a leading Northern Ireland renewable energy company, the wind farm has played host to a schools’ education programme which is being delivered in conjunction with Action Renewables.

Students from both Fivemiletown Primary School and Fivemiletown College along with St. Mary’s, Killyclogher and Omagh Integrated Primary were each given a tour of the wind farm facility which was tailored to their specific curriculum requirements.

Hosted by Laura Coey, Action Renewables, the pupils also took part in a series of educational activities and discussions which focused on the wind farm’s key operational features, the long term benefits of wind energy along with Northern Ireland’s abundant supply of wind.

Commenting on the local schools’ programme Jennifer McCorry, Project Manager, RES said: “We were very encouraged by the interest the pupils showed in the wind farm, their participation in discussions about important environmental issues along with their awareness of how the lifestyle choices we all make impact on our natural resources.

“The feedback we have received from the teachers was very positive and indicated that the programme successfully stimulated the children and underpinned their curriculum-based course work.

“RES has developed the educational partnership with Action Renewables and designed this programme to help school pupils develop their understanding of the importance of building a sustainable future. With a range of activities including science-based tours, discussions and even getting to look inside a wind turbine, we hope the pupils found the experience both enjoyable and educational.”

The Lendrum’s Bridge Wind Farm is situated between Fivemiletown and Fintona in County Tyrone. Commissioned between 1999 and 2003, it comprises 20 wind turbines which together generate 13.2MW of renewable electricity – equivalent to the annual needs of over 7,600 homes.
