Gildernew to step down from Assembly to focus on MP role
Sinn Fein Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has announced her intention to resign as an MLA for Fermanagh & South Tyrone in line with Sinn Fein’s commitment to end dual mandates.
She joins Conor Murphy, Pat Doherty & Paul Maskey in making this announcement. Martin McGuinness will resign as an MP to concentrate on his role as deputy First Minister.
Speaking from Stormont, Ms Gildernew said: “In line with Sinn Fein’s policy on ending dual mandates, I have announced my intention to resign as an MLA for Fermanagh & South Tyrone.
“I have been an MLA since 1998 and it has been a great honour for me to represent the people of this great constituency in the Assembly since its establishment.
“Many of the most important things to have happened to me personally happened when I was an MLA, from getting engaged and married to having my children, so I will leave with some fond memories, particularly of the many of the people I have met and worked with over the last fourteen years.
“I will of course remain as the MP for this constituency and I will continue to work with the strong Sinn Fein team of MLA’s and Councillors in Fermanagh & South Tyrone to deliver the best possible constituency service.
“This decision will also add an extra person to that team as well as allowing me to be freed up for increased lobbying activity in both Britain and elsewhere with respect to policy areas that are particularly relevant to my constituents and also, of course with respect to the promotion of the case for Irish unity.
“The party will hold conventions and the membership locally will decide who the replacement MLA is and we are hopeful that can be completed by the 2nd July 2012.”
