A Moy club referee is planning to run the Dublin City Marathon in aid of The Michaela Foundation.

Simon Brady, who has been a GAA referee within the county and for his club Moy Tir na Nogs for the past seven years, decided to set himself the challenge of running his first ever marathon. Simon wants to help raise funds for the foundation which was set up in memory of Michaela McAreavey who was murdered while on Honeymoon with her husband John on the island of Mauritius.

Speaking to the Tyrone Times, Simon admitted that he never had really considered the idea before. “I set myself a number of goals and challenges in terms of refereeing at the highest level within the county and to also take myself out of my comfort Zone. The challenge that I set myself was to run a marathon, a test of endurance, which was inconceivable 15 months ago.”

Simon then decided that the beneficary of the money which he hopes to raise from running the marathon should go to The Michaela Foundation.

“I approached John McAreavey of the foundation and requested his permission to run on their behalf and he gratefully accepted the request,” he said.

Simon is appealing to the clubs within Tyrone, all county boards and provinical councils, local businesses and indeed the general public, to make a small donation to the charity in support of his marathon which will take place on October 29th.

He said: “Both the Harte and McAreavey families have had their cross to bear, particularly in the last number of months and have carried themselves with great fortitude and dignity. So, with your help, I would like to give them a little something in return through The Michaela Foundation.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation on-line, can log on to themichaelafoundation.com and can make a payment through Paypal. Any donation made should end in the amount 26p, so as to identify that the monies have been raised by the Marathon Run.
