THOUSANDS of people will line the towns and villages of Tyrone on Tuesday to take part in a spectacular welcome for the Olympic Torch relay.

The symbolic flame will be paraded through 5 Tyrone towns by 13 bearers on Tuesday, with Omagh kickstarting the celebrations just before 10am and Aughnacloy rounding them off shortly after 3pm. Local torchbearers are busy training and organising celebration parties before the relay meanders its way through the district.

Carrying the torch in Omagh will be Killeeshil mother-of-four Clare Quinn, 37, Jack Kennedy, 15, from Derry, Kiara Kennedy, 15, from Lisburn, 18-year-old Omagh student Niall Murphy, a keen voluntary worker, and Lisa Bradley, 37, from Derry.

The torch is due to arrive in Dromore at 10.52am where the flame will be passed to Michaela Holywood from Crossgar, Steven Doherty from Derry, and Roisin Lynch also from Derry.

After visiting Irvinestown and Enniskillen, the Olympic convoy is due to hit Fivemiletown at 1.57pm where Johnny Davis, from Lisburn will carry the torch.

At 2.23pm, the relay will reach Clogher, where Danny Gallagher, 48, from Sion Mills, and Noel Milligan, 51, from Strabane, will carry the torch.

In Augher, Tyrone man Gabriel Kelly, 42, will parade the torch from 2.37pm. Michael Barr, 43, from Derry will carry the honours in Aughnacloy at 3pm.

Brian MacAuley, Manager of Dungannon Enterprise Centre, who will be carrying the torch on Tuesday evening in Newry, said the prospect of carrying the flame was ‘humbling’.

“The community has won this nomination, not me”, he said. “I will be sharing the experience with as many people as possible. I’ve even promised to show the torch to the barber who cut my hair yesterday.”

Brian has already a packed calendar for the week after carrying the flame, with numerous visits to local schools scheduled.
