Poetic memory of Milltown
Milltown - ona right roayl occasion
I stumbled across a story carried in one of the first issues of the Tyrone Times which is well worth reflecting upon, relating the tale of how a now sadly deceased Thomas Street resident got a lovely surprise when he was invited to visit a ongtime friend and former Dungannon resident who emigrated and was living in Mississauga, Ontario.
The late Joe Lawson was clearly delighted that the genial Fred Alexander has actually penned a poem about this old part of the town as he remembered it, especially for his most welcome visitor and friend.
Joe’s visit actually coincided with the celebrations for the 70th birthday of his old pal Fred, who had headed for his new life in Canada 36 years earlier.
“Fred has such affectionate memories of the life and home he left behind in Dungannon that he compiled a few verses of poetry for me during my visit” Joe revealed to the paper.
“Born in Milltown, the poem superbly describes to me the place I have loved as a boy and man.
“I would suggest that older residents and, indeed, the sons and daughters of those who once lived in the area - which has since undergone a major renovation - will find Fred’s composition of great interest” he suggested.
And he’s right, too. I am not from that part of town and I think it’s a wonderful little ditty. And I am sure most of our readers will also get great pleasure from the many great memories it stirs.
