Glens councillors pay tribute to Roads Service

COUNCILLORS in the Glens of Antrim have paid tribute to the hard work of Road Service, local farmers and contractors during the recent period of bad weather.

Sinn Fein councillor Colum Thompson, who is also a member of the volunteer rescue group 4x4 Response, said: “Conditions on the roads on higher ground throughout The Glens have been treacherous for a number of days making driving hazardous.

“Road Service have had gritters and snow ploughs servicing the roads almost constantly and it is full credit to them and their staff for doing such an effective job in these conditions. The situation has been difficult for drivers, particularly commuters making the journey too and from work but without the efforts of Road Service things would have been much worse.”

His party colleague Councillor Margaret Anne Mc Killop also thanked local farmers and contractors who came out and gave up their time and used machinery to help in the effort to keep roads clear.

“At this stage people in The Glens are used to dealing with adverse weather conditions. Local farmers and contractors were very quick to come out and use their tractors and machinery to help clear the roads. It shows the great community spirit we have here in The Glens and I could not pay a high enough tribute to anyone who helped out,” she said.

Councillor Noreen Mc Allister who spent many hours on the phone to Roads Service and kept people informed of developments said: “I want to give credit to everyone who helped out in any way, in truly terrible conditions.

“It is only when you see the reaction and effort of the local people that you realise the great community we have. Road Service, all the public agencies involved and local people did a great job making sure roads were passable and the chance of accidents greatly reduced. Go raibh maith agaibh to everyone.”
