A spokesperson for Coalisland Parish say they are “fully aware” of the situation regarding the site occupied by members of the Travelling Community in the town.

Travelling families have occupied the “serviced” site next to the Parochial Centre along the Stewartstown Road for several years.

The facility has previously housed the An Tearman service, which offered educational and other social support to the residents of the Travellers’ site.

The issue causing concern to one local Parishioner appears to involve damaged fencing in the area.

The Coalisland man, who did not wish to be named, told the TIMES people using the Parochial Centre were concerned that the fence had not been replaced since being damaged last year.

“People are just concerned that the Travellers on the site are trying to extend the site as it were and are asking where does this stop?

“There are lots of people in the town who have been asking what is happening here and the problem is, we simply don’t know.

“This fence came down last year and it was meant to have been put up again but it seems to have been moved further down and the question is, where will this end?”

The TIMES contacted Parish Priest, Fr Paul Byrne, about the concerns. He said he was “fully aware of the situation”.
