A Dungannon woman has been given a two-month suspended prison sentence for illegally claiming almost £18k in benefits.

The 58-year-old was given the sentence, which is suspended for two years, at Dungannon Crown Court on Monday.

The defendant was found to have kept secret the fact that she had a working partner while in receipt of benefits she was not entitled to.

The overpayment in this case totalled £17,597.35, which must be repaid to the Department for Communities.

Single Investigation Service (SIS) convicted 19 customers of benefit fraud in November 2016 bringing the total for 2016/2017 to 203. SIS issued 65 penalties in November 2016 bringing this year’s total to 384.
