Members of the community living in the Benburb area were given the opportunity to learn more about an exciting new art project which is planned for the village, at a special launch event.
It is understood the new piece, by sculptor Holger C Lonze, will be installed in May or June of this year and will incorporate the Benburb area’s valleys and landscapes.
The project is understood to be worth around £50,000.
Re-Imaging Benburb Steering Group has been successful in its application through the Building Peace through the Arts Programme – Re-Imaging Communities.
The project is part-financed by the European Union’s Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) managed by the Special EU Programmes Body; the Arts Council of Northern Ireland; and the International Fund for Ireland.
In the first stage of the project a local steering group was developed to help manage the process.
Artist Susan Connolly was recruited to carry out creative community consultation with a wide range of stakeholders and presented a report of her findings which included a number of themes for the proposed artwork.
Holger Lonze was selected as the successful artist who will be responsible for the design and creation of the artwork including foundations and final installation.
The funding which has been awarded will also provide for a number of community based workshops, details of which will be revealed within the coming months. See this week’s TIMES for more photos, which have been kindly submitted by Mark Winter (Frontline Freelance Media).
