Local history enthusiasts are hoping the fascinating discovery of what was once thought to have been the only source of water in Benburb, can be preserved as part of an ongoing project to develop the Priory and surrounding area.

Clearance work at the Priory has recently revealed the Old Benburb Well, which was also known locally as McGuigan’s Well and was rumoured to have aided in the feeling of good health.

Benburb Priory representatives are now hoping that funding can be attracted so that they can develop the feature to complement the ongoing work to tell the history of the village, which has recently seen the official unveiling of a new piece of public art close to Benburb Primary School and overlooking the stunning Benburb Valley.

One representative from those behind the development project said: “The Priory would love to have this re-instated through funding to be part of the story of the village; with its location beside the new artworks and the new valley trails it would be a great addition to all this fantastic work.”
