The funeral has been held for a Pomeroy man man who was killed in a freak road accident in Scotland last week.

Patrick McCabe (62) died and another man was hospitalised when a car crashed into them while they were recovering a broken down vehicle shortly after 6pm last Monday.

According to the Ulster Herald website, Mr McCabe was transporting the last of his furniture as he prepared to return to Pomeroy following a spell living in Scotland.

Mr McCabe was laid to rest on Monday morning following an 11am funeral Mass at the Church of St John’s, Slatequarry.

He had just built a new home in the town but never got the chance to move into it.

Sinn Féin councillor for the area, Cáthal Mallaghan, told the Herald: “It’s really sad news and the local community is in shock.

“This was a tragic accident and my sympathies go out to the family.”
