Dungannon construction company lays off staff and cuts pay

ONE of Dungannon's largest construction companies has temporarily laid off 35 staff as it struggles with a slump in orders.

The McAvoy Group, based on the Ballynakilly Road, is also asking its remaining employees to accept a 10 percent cut in their salaries.

Staff were informed of the streamlining measures last week.

The company, which employees about 100 at its Ballynakilly site, specialises in off-site construction, manufacturing steel and timber framed modular buildings.

Last year the company was awarded a multi-million euro contract to provide modular buildings for the development of Terminal 2 (T2), the second passenger terminal, at Dublin International Airport.

It was the company's second major contract at the international airport.

Managing Director, Eugene Lynch, said the temporary lay-offs were due to the impact of the credit crunch on orders, particularly from the Republic of Ireland, as well as delays to major infrastructure projects in Northern Ireland.

"We have taken a number of measures to strengthen the overall competitiveness of our manufacturing operations.
