Katie gets hospital date in USA

THERE was some good news this week for the family of little Katie Maguire who are fund raising for her to go to America for life saving treatment.

Her father, Gary McCann, says they have been offered a consultation at a top US hospital on August 20.

Katie, who suffers from intractable epilepsy which causes her to have violent seizures each day, is expected to travel if she is able.

Gary and his partner Mekila Maguire have launched a ‘Keep Baby Katie Awake’ fund raising campaign which is steadily gaining momentum.

“Our concern now is that once people know Katie is going for treatment they will stop giving,” he said. “We need the funds now more than ever.”

Gary said they have been overwhelmed by the public response to the campaign which is aiming to raise 250,000.

Although the money is starting to roll in, they are still far from their target figure.

“People have shown tremendous generosity and we can’t thank them enough,” he said. “But we need the money to keep coming in as once we are out in America it will be needed.”

Gary explained that in the hospital they will have to be in a position to pay for each treatment procedure as it arises.

“I think we are more worried now than ever that people will loose interest,” he added.

The couple, accompanied by Katie, attended the launch of Magherafelt District Summer Festival at the weekend and literally ‘stole the show.’

Several thousand pounds were collected on the day and the couple took the opportunity to thank the people for their help and support.

The campaign continues tomorrow (Friday) with an Indian Food Night in the Ballyronan Marina; quiz evening in Murphy’s Bar, disco in Ban Joes Bar and charity event in John T’s Bar, all Dungiven.

On Saturday a Pro Fitness Strongman Competition will take place (weather permitting) at Burn Road, Cookstown; chapel collection on Sunday at Lavey; school play at Holy Trinity College, Cookstown on Monday.

On Saturday, June 28, there is a bag pack at Asda, Cookstown, and an Indian Food Night in Rainey Old Boys’ RC, Magherafelt.
