Student numbers sitting transfer tests down on last year

HUNDREDS of pupils from primary schools who are seeking a place at local grammar schools sat the entrance test over the weekend.

This is the second year that schools, including St Patrick's Academy and St Joseph's Grammar, Donaghmore, have run their own unofficial 11-plus style entrance test.

The young pupils have been spending the last number of months preparing for the multiple-choice maths and English papers used by Catholic and a small amount of non-Catholic schools.

The number of pupils taking this year's entrance test are said to be lower than last year's, however Dungannon's Royal School Principal Dr Burnett says this is due to the blip in numbers of P7 pupils across Northern Ireland.
