THE official opening of An Seansiopa (‘the old shop’), a new community resource centre on the Lisnahull Road in Dungannon, took place on Saturday afternoon past.

The facility was opened by the oldest and youngest residents in the area.

Ballysaggart Area Community Association has worked hard over the last six months to bring this previously derelict property into use for the community.

Chairperson of the Association, Tony McNally, explained how the resource centre plan was brought to fruition.

“This property is well known in the area and had fallen into dereliction over the last number of years”, said Mr McNally.

“We, in the residents’ group, secured funding from Communities in Transition (CFNI and IFI) to create a resource centre for the people of the area.

“An Seansiopa is open to everyone to use, to call in for a cuppa or a chat.

“We hope to use the centre to provide activities for young and old. Between now and 2014 we will celebrate the 40th birthday of Lisnahull which was built between 1972 and 1974.

“We will have a number of events to mark this in the coming months and years.

“The ridiculous cost of fuel is something that affects us all. We hope to continue our work on fuel poverty with the promotion of oil stamps and residents are welcome to call in to sign up.”

Mr McNally also thanked local GAA clubs and Irish language activists in the area for their support with the project. He continued:

“An Seansiopa will promote the culture of the area both old and new. We thank the local GAA clubs and local Irish Language activists for their support in this project.

“The committee have worked tirelessly over the last few months to bring An Seansiopa to the people of the area.

“It has become a great talking point in the area and everyone has been wishing the project well.

“I thank everyone who has helped bring this day about and those who have expressed messages of support.

“This was a shop that was the hub of the community in the area and I have no doubt that An Seansiopa will be the centre of the community once more.

“We are particularly pleased that the youngest resident and the oldest resident will carry out the official opening as this is symbolic of the centre being a place for everyone.”
