Celebrate the beginning of Spring at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre!

GET creative and learn more about the fascinating customs that mark the beginning of spring at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre this weekend.

The 1st February marks the beginning of Spring and, according to Irish mythology, the time when the goddess Brigid replaced the goddess of winter to bring light and spring. To celebrate this transition, Craigavon Borough Council’s Heritage and Conservation Service are hosting a great event on Sunday 27th January where you will have the opportunity to turn your hand to some craft making by creating your very own St Brigid’s Cross to help celebrate her festival, which takes place on 2nd February.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to find out more about wonderful traditions from years gone by and discover the intriguing history of Brigid who later became a Christian saint.

The event will run from 2pm to 4pm and the cost is £4.00 per person. Booking is essential and activities are suitable for children aged 7 years and over.

The Heritage and Conservation Service are also hosting a fantastic 2 hour programme of spring related activities available for schools and community groups throughout the Borough from Monday 28th – Friday 1st February. This programme will cover signs of spring including new growth, spring flowers and phenology (the study of the seasons), migration, seed and bulb planting and local traditions associated with spring. The perfect programme to bring schools and groups up to date with the changing season!

For further information or to book your place on the Sunday event or to book the Heritage and Conservation Service 2 hour programme for your school or community group, please contact the team at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, on 028 38 322205 or email Andrew.griggs@craigavon.gov.uk
