INDEPENDENT Republican councillor for Dungannon, Barry Monteith has commended all those involved in the Civil Rights March from Coalisland to Dungannon.
“I would like to thank everyone who attended the civil rights march and rally which retraced the steps of the original march in 1968,” Montieth said.
“It is a fundamental human right of all citizens to organise and protest on the rights of all. This area has a long history of democratic and peaceful protest.
“This right goes beyond representation. It goes to the right of all of us to have our say on the issues which affect our lives.
“In 2012, just as in 1968, those who took part were criticised by those who should be addressing the issues rather than attacking those who are affected by the denial of human rights.
“I pay tribute to all those who took part and those who sent messages of support from all over Ireland and abroad. The issues raised were many and varied.
“National sovereignty, social justice, affordable housing, jobs, internement, Diplock trials, emigration, language rights, health cuts, education cuts amongst others were all covered.
“Hopefully this event will have inspired people to continue to campaign for the rights of all.”
