Clergy to go the extra mile for late priest
The Armagh Diocesan Clergy Challenge - a walk/run from the Bann to the Boyne - will take place from Thursday, November 8 to Sunday, November 11. All proceeds raised are in aid of the ISPCC and the clergy invite people to join in this exciting challenge sponsored by Allianz. A NUMBER of priests from the Archdiocese of Armagh are set to go from ‘Bann to the Boyne’ in memory of a popular Magherafelt priest who passed away last month.
The clerics will walk across parts of County Derry and Tyrone in memory of the late Father Andrew McNally who lost an 18 month battle with a brain tumour in September. It will also raise much needed cash for the Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
The clergymen will run or walk the length of Armagh diocese, from the most northern end, the River Bann, to the River Boyne, the most southern end.
The challenge reflects the late Fr Andrew McNally’s passion for running. The 52 year-old was a keen runner up until his illness struck.
The event will begin in the parish of Newbridge, Co Derry on Thursday 8th November and it will conclude in the parish of St Peter’s, Drogheda, Co Louth on Sunday 11th November and the relay event will take place over the four days. Priests who have signed up to the exciting challenge are inviting people from their parishes to join with them in the walk or run.
Fr Gerry Campbell who is the main organiser of the event said: “This promises to be a great event for the priests and people of our diocese and already a good number of priests have signed up to the event. Over the four days, some priests will run and others will walk different lengths and we are hoping that people will join their local priest for the challenge. It’s good that we should do this in memory of Fr Andy McNally who was a great athlete and fund raiser. I think that it’s a very positive gesture that the funds we raise will help support the important work of the ISPCC.”
