COALISLAND Community par three golf course is shortly to be acknowledged by Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council for its contributions to cross community efforts over the last 25 years.

The course, opened in August 1987, was the brainchild of hard -working Coalisland solicitor and community activist the late Paddy Duffy opened for business as a non-profit charity venture.

The first players to grace the fairways of the new course were Paddy Duffy, PJ O’Neill, Dr Joe Hackett and Monsignor Liam McEntaggart.

A few years later the course committee organised a four ball match play charity tournament which involved golf professionals Paul Leonard (Cookstown), Paul McCrystal Dunmurray, Barry Hamill (Dungannon) and a young Darren Clarke who eventually emerged victorious.

Darren received the princely sum of £50 for his efforts which was quickly disposed of in the company of friends at the nearby Brackaville GFC Social Club.

In 1998 a new clubhouse was built by Pat O’Hagan beside the course’s main entrance and 25 years on the community facility is still going strong and continues to attract golfers from all ages both male and female from all over Tyrone and further field.

Indeed, a debt of gratitude must go to the contribution and commitment of Mrs Mary Duffy and Mr Danny McIntyre.

The course occupies 17 acres and embraces part of two townlands, Roughan and Brackaville.

The course is open from sunrise to sunset all year long with the green fees exceptionally reasonable.

The Borough’s Lord Mayor accompanied by other members of the council will be at the course of Friday next, 24th August all of whom will receive a warm welcome from all hands connected with the course.

During the course of the day Dungannon Golf Club professional Chris Jelly will be conducting a golf clinic with all junior golfers.
