Cookstown Council strike 2 per cent rates increase

COOKSTOWN District Council has struck a rates increase of 2 per cent for the incoming year.

Members unanimously agreed to the figure at Tuesday night’s full council meeting.

Council Chair Tony Quinn said: “This is part of a two year investment programme which will enhance the leisure centre, the sports arena, play areas and all over service delivery for the district.

“It should be noted that 2 per cent is lower than the rate of inflation.

“We are investing in our people, services and are being financially prudent. Spending will also help the local economy as well.”

Ulster Unionist councillor Trevor Wilson agreed with councillor Quinn’s comments.

“This shows we are moving forward and spending money on things people need and will benefit them.”

Sinn Fein’s Sean Clarke added: “ There is a lot in it for the future. This is a forward looking programme with every opportunity for development. I congratulate everyone involved.”

Chief Executive Adrian McCreesh commended the party leaders, members and council departments for their work on striking the 2013/14 rate.

Her said: “It allows Cookstown to do what it does best.”
