Cookstown students design innovative ‘Eco’ app

STUDENTS from Cookstown High School have been praised by the Environment Minister after designing their very own environment friendly phone app.

Year 12 student’s thought up and designed the ‘EcoSmart’ recycling app with the help of IT teacher Robert Johnston.

It aims to promote the user’s knowledge of recycling and includes illustrations of suitable and unsuitable items for recycling bins and a media presentation on the effects of disposing of items irresponsibly.

The app also includes an interactive game and a Google Map which identifies recycling points around Northern Ireland.

“The team were very hard working – especially so as the Year 12 students were right in the middle of their GCSE ‘mock’ examinations,” Cookstown High School’s, IT Teacher, Robert Johnston explained.

“They thoroughly enjoyed meeting the Minister and I look forward to even more developments from these Cookstown High School students whose app helps ‘clean-up’ the Province.”

The team took part in the RTE Junior Dragon’s Den with their app and while they didn’t make the finals in the end, their innovation had already been recognised.

Backed by Business Eye magazine, the University of Ulster held its own Dragons’ Den style scenario in which teams pitched their software design to judges and demonstrated its operation last spring.

EcoSmart was announced as the overall winner for the competition with each pupil receiving a Tablet Computer. The judges commended their solution on quality, presentation and functionality and encouraged them to develop the design idea further.

Praising the innovative project Minister Attwood said: “The value of the educational learning experience for the students is two-fold as it deals with the whole issue of identifying suitable and unsuitable items for recycling bins and highlights recycling points in a very user-friendly way that is appropriate to younger people.

The app has now been released for worldwide free download from the Google Android App Market.
