Council urged to reconsider test purchasing

DUNGANNON Council has been urged to look again at whether it will undertake test purchasing for age related products such as cigarettes.

The council had previously decided not to participate in the scheme as it was felt the initiative raised issues in relation to child protection.

However, at a recent sub-committee meeting, elected members were asked to reconsider the council’s position since it has responsibility for the enforcement of legislation relating to the sale of such products.

As well as tobacco, the legislation has now been extended to cover the use of sunbeds and butane, councillors were told.

It was agreed that the council be asked to liaise with other councils to establish what their experience of test purchasing has been and report back to a future committee meeting.
