COUPLES in Dungannon Borough are more likely to tie the knot younger and are less likely to have lived together prior to marriage than in other areas of Northern Ireland.

The information revealed by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) has shown that couples in Dungannon are more likely to get married younger than their counterparts in other council areas.

Men in Dungannon are most likely to get married at an average age of 31.7 years, second youngest amongst their peers with only men in Magherafelt marrying younger at 31.6 years.

In comparison men in North Down marry on average over four years later at 35.8 years.

The women of Dungannon get married on average at the age of 29.9 years like their male counterparts second only to Magherafelt who get married age 29.5 years.

Women in North Down, like their male counterparts get married older at an average age of 33.5 years.

One local man preparing to marry his fiancee Janine McCann next year is Aughnacloy teacher Damien McAnespie.

Damien who saw his best men get married within ten days of each other earlier in the year isn’t surprised by the statistics.

“I’ve had a few of my friends get married at 24 but I can understand why the overall trend is for older marriages.

“Considering the expense involved with getting married now. Not only do the weddings themselves cost a lot of money but setting up a home after marriage is also very expensive. Sometimes you have to remember that weddings only last twelve hours.

“With the current economic climate people already have financial worries over mortgages, renting and job security.

Damien, who recently saw two of his best men get married within days of each other, continued: “I do think 21, 22 or 23 is a very young and money worries can add an extra pressure at that age that you may not need.”

Dungannon also has the highest percentage of couples were neither partner was never previously married at 91 percent a figure greatly higher than North Down were on average 68 percent of couples have a partner who was never previously married.

The NISRA figures also reveal Dungannon couples to be slightly more conservative with 33 percent of couples having lived together prior to marriage a very low figure in comparison to North Down on 70 per cent and Craigavon on 58 per cent.
