Cross Border Rural Diversification

Mr Colin McKenna, a native of Dungannon, who is the Development Manager with the Irish Central Border Network (ICBAN) opened a seminar entitled “Rural Diversification” last Wednesday.

The seminar was held in the Market Place Theatre, Armagh was facilitated by ICBAN under their wider Spatial Planning Initiative being taken forward for the Central Border Region.

The seminar was organized to highlight and inform that help is at hand to develop business ideas.

ICBAN is a cross-border grouping which includes Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council as well as the Councils of Armagh, Cavan, Cookstown, Donegal, Fermanagh, Omagh, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo.

The organisation has received funding of £1,456,995 for a Spatial Planning Initiative, part-financed by the European

Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Cllr Robert Turner welcomed the delegates from north and south to Armagh. The highly acclaimed, Dr Finbarr Daly from CAFRE, Loughery Campus made a presentation to the delegates, informing them of options and opportunities available

in the Central Border Region to diversify into other activities on their farms. The audience was also enlightened by presentations from two enthusiastic and optimistic like-minded farmers that have already begun the diversification process. These were Brian McGirr from Enniskillen and Jim Mc Gill from Newry.

Both Brian and Jim brought their unique blend of practical management experience and down to earth

advice to the delegates. Both speakers were hugely fascinating and this was reflected in the series of questions that involved almost all delegates who were keen to hear the full story and impact that the changes made to their lives.

Mr McKenna brought the seminar to a close by expressing his gratitude to the speakers, but especially to the delegates who listened attentively. He went on to encourage farmers to avail of the services provided by Dr Finabrr Daly and CAFRE.
