Dishonestly used electricity

A 29 year-old Maghera man who used a device to dishonestly receive electricity has received a suspended prison term.

Patrick Cassidy of Sunnyside Drive was convicted of dishonestly obtaining electricity at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The court heard how Cassidy had installed the device two years prior to it being found by electrical engineers in his home on August 1st of this year. A defence solicitor said the 29 year-old had installed the box “much touted on the streets” but had “forgotten” it was there until engineers arrived at his home to check his meter.

He said his client was now paying back costs to Northern Ireland Electricity.

Sentencing Cassidy, District Judge Des Perry described his actions as “quite dishonest” and sentenced him to three months in prison suspended for 18 months.
