Drivers seeing red over faulty traffic lights

A FAULT in the traffic lights which serve one of Dungannon’s busiest junctions has been causing chaos for motorists in the town.

Knock-on delays have been caused to traffic throughout the town following the problem at the William Street, Irish Street and Ann Street junction.

According to the Roads Service, the root of the issue has been identified as an “intermittent traffic detection fault”.

And, despite a Roads Service spokesperson insisting the lights are fully operational and do not pose a safety hazard, one local councillor has described the situation as “scandalous”.

Dungannon Town Independent Republican Councillor, Barry Monteith, told the TIMES: “There are tailbacks right up into Market Square as a result of this problem.

“Roads Service have told me it could be 10 days before work is finished to fix this problem, but that is not acceptable.

“The lights are only letting three or four cars through and people think they are broken. Thankfully there have not been any accidents, but this should have been fixed.

“This is one of the busiest junctions in the town, and one of the main thoroughfares into the town. It is scandalous that the lights are not working properly.

“I would call on Roads Service to fix this immediately. As it is, this is a recipe for disaster.”

A Roads Service spokesman explained: “Roads Service has identified an intermittent traffic detection fault at the William Street, Irish Street and Ann Street junction in Dungannon.

“The traffic lights are fully operational and do not present a safety hazard. A specialist contractor has been commissioned to repair the fault and the work is scheduled to be carried out on Monday (4 March).”
