Dungannon car parks net as much as £195,000 in fines

TRAFFIC wardens in Dungannon have slapped 2,168 parking tickets on motorists who have fallen foul of on-street parking rules in the past year, generating at much as £195,000 in fines.

The latest figures have been revealed by the Department of Regional Development.

Last year, Castle Hill car park was revealed as one of the most ticketed car parks in Northern Ireland, with wardens issuing a total of 392 fixed penalty notices, raising around £12,000. More tickets are issued in Dungannon than in neighbouring Cookstown, which had 1,588 penalty notices imposed, with most of the tickets issued around the town’s Market Square where on-street car parking is scarce and limited to one-hour only.

Shoppers using the Castle Hill car park have complained of the ‘aggressive’ ticketing policy pursued by the town’s traffic wardens and accused them of ‘driving shoppers away’, while councillors and local businesses have called for more free car parking to encourage shoppers.
